Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to launch in September, and that timing is no secret to anyone. What's more interesting is that Xiaomi has reportedly built its entire roadmap around launching a direct rival, the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max, in that same window.

Not a copy, a continuation

When news first surfaced that Xiaomi was working on a phone called the "17 Pro Max," the initial reaction was skepticism, it seemed like a transparent attempt to mimic Apple's naming convention. The reality turned out to be different: rather than copying Apple, Xiaomi was answering its own hypothetical question, what would it look like if Xiaomi launched a "Pro Max" tier of its own? That device turned out to be genuinely popular, and the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max is simply the next iteration of an already-established, well-received lineup.

The signature feature: a real second display

For anyone unfamiliar with this Pro Max lineage, its defining feature has always been a second display on the back of the phone, and importantly, this isn't a small secondary screen limited to showing the time. It's a full touch display capable of handling multiple genuine use cases.

A new display technology: RYGGB panels

Both the front and rear displays on the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max are reportedly moving to a new RYGGB pixel arrangement, rather than the standard RGB layout used across most phones. This adds dedicated yellow subpixels alongside the usual red, green, and blue ones, aimed at delivering a significant brightness boost across both displays.

Color options

The phone's primary color is expected to be a burgundy shade, closely mirroring the color options rumored for Apple's iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro Max lineup. A secondary highlight color, a light blue tone, is also expected this year, again closely tracking colorways associated with Apple's own lineup.

Camera: the first 200MP dual setup

Since Xiaomi has a track record of building genuinely capable telephoto "macro" cameras, this dual 200MP setup wouldn't just be useful for zoom photography, it could also enable extremely detailed close-up shots, effectively giving the phone near-microscope-level capability for examining fine detail in close subjects.

Battery: living up to the "Max" name

The "Max" branding in this lineup has consistently referred to battery capacity. Last generation's Pro Max shipped with a 7,500mAh battery, and this time, even the standard Pro model is reportedly gaining a thicker profile to accommodate a 7,000mAh battery. The Pro Max itself is expected to exceed 8,000mAh, with some reports suggesting it could reach as high as 10,000mAh, a figure that would align with battery capacities already seen in Xiaomi's Redmi Note lineup.

A dual 200MP camera setup could give the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max near-microscope-level detail for close-up photography, not just zoom.

Dual vibration motors

Another notable addition: dual vibration motors. Most phones, including iPhones, rely on a single precise haptic motor to produce tactile feedback. Xiaomi is reportedly splitting this into two separate motors, one near the top of the phone and one near the bottom, working in tandem, expected to deliver noticeably stronger, more powerful haptic feedback than previous single-motor designs.
