Google Pixel 11 Series: Why This Could Be the Year’s Most Important Phone Launch

While most of the attention this year is aimed at the iPhone 18 series, there's a strong case that the real turning point in smartphones is coming from Google instead. The Pixel 11 series isn't just another annual refresh, it's being positioned as one of the first phones built from the ground up around the idea of a genuine "AI phone," and the implications go well beyond a few new camera filters.

What actually makes a phone an "AI phone"?

A regular smartphone earns that name because you can extend its functionality by downloading apps, something that simply wasn't possible on older phones like classic Nokia devices, where the phone did exactly what it shipped with and nothing more.

An AI phone represents the next step in that evolution. Instead of just running the apps you download, the entire software layer is designed so your AI assistant can also operate those apps on your behalf. Using Google's ecosystem as the example: Gemini won't just answer questions, it will be able to actually perform tasks across your other apps, the same way you would manually.

Smarter widgets, not just app shortcuts

Today's widgets are built entirely by the companies that make them, an Uber widget exists because Uber built it. Under this new AI-driven approach, users will reportedly be able to ask their assistant to pull specific information out of any app and turn it into a widget themselves, without waiting for that company to build one.

Why software announcements matter for a hardware launch

Technically, none of this AI functionality is tied to specific hardware, it's part of the software update Google is rolling out, and there's a real chance it eventually reaches other Android phones too. But because Android 17 is reportedly being built around AI from the ground up, the Pixel 11 series becomes the first place these capabilities will actually show up.

Hardware: a major chipset shift

Google is reportedly moving to a new generation of its own chipset, one powerful enough that early comparisons suggest it could match or exceed the performance of Apple's next-generation A18 Pro chip, expected in next year's standard iPhone 18. Part of the reason: for the first time, Google's chip is being manufactured by TSMC, the same company that has long produced Apple's processors, previously, Google's chips were manufactured by Samsung.

Google has also reportedly dropped Samsung for another key component: the modem. The Wi-Fi/cellular modem is being replaced with a MediaTek-made modem instead, which matters significantly for AI features specifically, since many AI models run partly online, a slow modem would bottleneck the entire AI experience regardless of chip power.

Google's chip is reportedly powerful enough to match or exceed Apple's next-generation A18 Pro, for the first time putting Android hardware directly in that conversation.

RAM: Google isn't immune to industry pressures either

Leaks suggest a notable step back in one area: last year's Pixel 10 series shipped with 16GB of RAM across the lineup, while this year's base Pixel 11 model is expected to drop to 12GB RAM, reportedly to help keep pricing on the higher-end Pro models from increasing further.

A new physical feature: the glow light

One interesting hardware addition is a glow light on the back of the phone, functioning similarly to a notification LED. Calling on Gemini currently triggers a multi-colored visual effect on-screen; that same effect is reportedly being brought to a physical light on the back of the device, turning green once a task completes, or red if something goes wrong, all without needing to pick up the phone.

Camera specs: a mixed picture

Rear camera megapixel counts are reportedly staying the same as the previous generation, with the main sensor said to receive a processing upgrade. The front camera is where things get surprising: leaks suggest all three models will use a 13MP front camera, down from the 42MP sensor used in last year's Pro models. It's unclear whether this reflects new sensor technology or an inaccurate leak.

Colors and lineup

The lineup is expected to include four models, including a foldable variant, with an unusually large number of color options across the range.

The Pixel Fold's design also appears to be evolving, with reports suggesting a reduced metal camera bar area and a larger overall camera module layout on the back.
